Maryland Continental Loan Office Bill of Exchange May 11, 1781 Choice New. Listed as U.S. 95 in Anderson, it's an uncut pair consisting of a Third and Fourth of Exchange made out for $18. Both notes from this vertical pair are signed by Francis Hopkinson (a signer of the Declaration of independence) as Treasurer of Loans and by Thomas Harwood for the State of Maryland. Maryland is the second most difficult colony from which to obtain these certificates. They're rated as a high R-7, which Anderson considers to be four to six known, in his excellent book The Price of Liberty. Only Virginia, with one to three known, is considered rarer. This unsevered pair is in essentially as-issued condition but for some extremely minor edge tears at the top that do not reach any portion of the design. This lovely and valuable pair should create considerable bidder interest. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
