Queen consort of King James II of England and VII of Scotland. When James died on September 6, 1701, Mary succeeded in inducing Louis to recognize her son as king of England and Scotland, an act that accelerated English participation in the War of the Spanish Succession. LS in French, signed “Marie R,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, May 4, 1716. Untranslated letter to the Bishop of St. Omer, thanking him for having donated a large canonicat to a mutual friend, which she believes will do much good. In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), and mild scattered foxing and toning.
