Beautiful engraving of Mary Magdalen in a cave surrounded by symbolic objects associated with her such as a crucifix, skull and an ointment jar. The text on the page reads in Latin as follows: "Phls. Galle excud. Theodor Galle fecit. Criminis exemplar fit MAGDALENA piandi, Fusis que veniam promeruit lachrymis: Ut peccatorum nimia qui mole grauantur, In cruce CHRISTI alacres pema fidema locent . Corn. Kil. Duffl. Don Guilielmo Verwilt herbario peritissimo artiumque onmium elegantium admiratori Philippus Gallaeus amico suo L.M. dedicabat." Good early impression on paper. The print is undated but we know that Theodor Galle lived between 1571 and 1633 in Antwerp, Belgium. He was an engraver, publisher and print dealer. The Galle brothers were sons of Philip Galle (1537-1612), a Dutch draughtsman, engraver, publisher, print dealer, writer and historian. Trimmed just outside the platemark. In good condition as shown. Please ask questions, request additional photos and shipping costs before buying.

Measurements: Engraving sheet measures 9.2"" by 6.1" (23.3 cm by 15.5 cm); image measures 8.9" by 5.8" (22.6 cm by 14.8 cm) approximately.
