An inveterate traveller, Mary Georgina Barton was born in Dundalk and studied art at the Westminster School in London, 1895-1898. She financed her many overseas trips through teaching art in Rome, England and Ireland, as well as painting "exotic" landscapes and genre pictures in countries as diverse as India and Mexico, producing a lively account of her journey through the latter, published as Impressions of Mexico (1911). Professional in outlook, she also enjoyed life's small absurdities, recounting in the aforementioned book an incident in which she was forced to wade through a bog pool in the Connemara in order to retrieve a partially finished canvas which had been caught up in a gust of wind - an instance of the many trials and tribulations which may beset the unfortunate artist en plein air.
