Large collection of Mary Astor typed stories, personal letters, essays and signed magazine covers. Lot includes: (1) 21 November 1957 letter referencing her father and his response to her alcoholism, ''...he never directly said that I was an alcoholic...But he was forcing resentment -- and resentment is the trigger for an alcoholic...'' With an editorial note possibly in her hand; (2) 27 December 1956 typed letter discussing a draft of one of her books; (3) ''The Blonde-Type Girl'' 26pp. short story by Mary Astor; (4) Single-page editorial response to ''The Blonde-Type''; (5) ''Morning Star'' 8pp. story by Astor, with line edits in pen; (6) ''Hand Made House'', another story treatment by Mary Astor. 14pp. stapled; (7) Typed article titled, ''Drinking Can Be Licked''. This 15pp. essay quite emotionally details the disease of alcoholism from her personal experience. Reads in part, ''...A great deal of excessive drinking is merely being a hog, and anyone can stop being a hog. But to recover from alcoholism takes no will power at all. Quite the opposite. It takes surrender. It takes acceptance...'' With an addendum possibly by her editor, ''Pretty good article of this type. Her approach is somewhat different than other pieces in this category''; (8-9) ''True Story'' and ''Motion Picture'' magazine covers, each signed ''Mary Astor''. Lastly includes a newspaper clipping from 1967 written by Astor and discussing Humphrey Bogart. Magazine covers measure 8.5'' x 11.5'' with chipping to edges. Overall, very good condition.
