ALS signed “M. V. Buren,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, June 26, 1826. Letter of introduction, in full: "My friend & brother Senator Col. Hayne of South Carolina will stop at Utica long enough to visit the Trenton Falls. Do me the favor to assist him in the pursuit of his objects." Van Buren's name has been neatly penned across the top of the letter in another hand. In very good to fine condition, with multiple intersecting folds, a few light stains, and toning along the left edge from a strip of mounting residue on the reverse. Accompanied by a color postcard of Buchanan by Raphael Tuck & Sons. A staunch proponent of the states' rights doctrine, Robert Y. Hayne represented South Carolina in the Senate from 1823 to 1832, before serving one term as governor of that state.
