[Martin Van Buren] Creek Fraud Lands Grant
[Creek Indians] Martin Van Buren General Land Office Document Secretarially Signed. One page, partly printed, 11.5" x 17.5", Washington, April 15, 1840. The text begins, "Whereas, Octi-arche fixico, one of the Creek Tribe of Indians, by virtue of a Treaty between the United States and the said Creek Tribe of Indians, made the 24th day of March, 1832, became entitled, out of lands ceded to the United States by the said Treaty, to..." This treaty, known as the Treaty of Cusseta, ceded all Creek land east of the Mississippi River to the U.S. government in return for land grants that were to be made to individual Creeks. The purpose was to move the tribe west. Most all of the lands promised to the Creeks were either purchased at a pittance by individuals taking advantage of the Indians' ignorance of value, or were overrun by squatters. The U.S. government did little to stop these practices, and eventually the Indians were moved west of the Mississippi and got little or nothing in return for their land. This particular document would seem to be an example this practice as it certifies that the land once promised to Octi-arche fixico had been granted to James C. Watson & Co. Folds, some with splitting, light staining, wafer seal missing, else very good. A sobering reminder of a dark chapter in our country's history.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
