<B>Martin Van Buren Autograph Letter Signed "</B></I><B><I>M Van Buren</B></I></B></I><B>"</B></I>. Two pages, 8" x 9.75", Kinderhook, [New York], November 20, 1845 to John T. Hudson concerning an appointment in the Polk Administration. He writes, in part: "<I>...I would long since have complied with your request by giving you a letter to the President-elect, had I not for reasons which I know would be unsatisfactory </B></I>[?]<I> to you...My great respect for your deceased Father & the many favourable accounts I receive from the most valuable quarters in regard to your own merits personal & political, have however induced me to give you this proof of my own confidence in the strength of your claims upon most of the Government...</B></I>" John T. Hudson was New York State Canal Commissioner and in 1854 secured an appointment as Collector for the Port of Buffalo, New York. With integral address leaf addressed in Van Buren's hand together with his franking signature: "<I>Free M Van Buren</B></I>" and a red Kinderhook, N.Y. postmark.
