Autograph letter signed “M. Van Buren'' as Secretary of State dated 20 June 1829. Van Buren writes to Secretary of War John Eaton, whose recent marriage ignited the Petticoat Affair and inadvertently catapulted Van Buren to political power. In part: “Major Sproult of New York is a candidate for the Superintendent of the Armory at Harpers Ferry, I certainly hope it will be in your power to gratify him…” Second integral page bears an address panel in Van Buren's hand. 2pp. letter on one sheet measures 8'' x 9.75'' In near fine condition.
