Martin, Leopold C., and Charles Trübner. THE CURRENT GOLD AND SILVER COINS OF ALL COUNTRIES, THEIR WEIGHT AND FINENESS, AND THEIR INTRINSIC VALUE IN ENGLISH MONEY. WITH FACSIMILES OF THE COINS. London: Trübner & Co., 1863. 8vo, contemporary brown half morocco, gilt; spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; all page edges gilt; marbled endpapers. xx pages; 141 attractive plates of coins printed in metallic tints and in relief on a bright yellow ground, each with a leaf of facing descriptive text. Binding rubbed, but sound; occasional spotting. Still near fine. The most ambitious of the British productions using electrotype dies and metallic inks, the illustrations of coins depicted on the plates are among the most pleasing of the genre. The work itself was a combination cambist and visual guide, providing merchants with current exchange values and excellent facsimiles of genuine coins in circulation at the time. Production details of the illustrations are provided in the preface: "Electricity, by means of the galvanic battery, has been rendered available for the formation of the casts, and the facsimiles of the coins which form the illustrations of the present volume, have been taken from the coins themselves by Messrs. Müller and Kersting, with a fidelity which no other process can ensure--the printing of the impressions being no less carefully and accurately executed by Messrs. Braun and Wustlich." The yellow plate background is rarely encountered.
