TLS signed “Martin L. King, Jr.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Southern Christian Leadership Conference letterhead, October 24, 1964. Letter of gratitude to Henry Gurau just ten days after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. In part: “Your kind, encouraging words are of inestimable value for the continuance of our humble efforts. Although the days are sometimes dark, I am convinced that we stand on the threshold of our world’s bright tomorrows.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some light toning to the upper two-thirds of the page.
King’s letter is dated just ten days after he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the youngest person ever presented with the honor. His eloquent reference to the days being dark are indeed an understatement. Widespread racial tension in the South, segregated restaurants and schools, KKK rallies and hate crimes, plus the backlash against Congress's passing of the Civil Rights Bill all contributed to clashes in Georgia's capital city (headquarters of the SCLC) during the first few months of 1964. The Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 and the police attacks on civil-rights marchers in March 1965 helped turn the tide ever so slightly for advocates. Throughout his life and right up until his tragic death, King never flinched at the potential danger of his campaigns. Despite the very real threats, King’s dream in the coming of better days is clearly demonstrated here.
