Martin Luther King Jr. was an American activist, clergyman and leader in the African American civil rights movement.

This item is an early, rare programme from the 40th anniversary of the Utility Club, Inc. on 15 June 1957 in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York. It was at this event that the Utility Club named Martin Luther King Jr. as their man of the year.

The Utility Club was a black women's organisation which aimed to help African American communities in New York City.

Two days prior to travelling to New York, King met with then Vice President Richard Nixon to discuss extreme racial violence in the southern states.

The programme, which measures 8.5" x 10.5", is autographed "M.L. King Jr." and also features the autograph of Laurence C. Jones, founder of the Piney Woods Country Life School. Jones spent much time educating African Americans in the segregated southern states.

This fascinating item features some mild toning to the covers and mild handling wear but is otherwise in very good condition. It is accompanied by a seating list booklet and a note regarding gratuity.
An early autograph from one of the 20th century's most influential figures.
