Martin Brothers Stoneware Floral Pitcher
Hand-decorated stoneware pitcher by the Martin Brothers, dated 1882. The bulbous body is adorned with incised and glazed floral motifs, featuring sprays of five-petaled blossoms and dark brown leaves against a warm mottled brown ground. The pitcher includes a single applied handle in a fish scale pattern with molded texturing and high-relief modeling. The upper collar bears a decorative band with a stylized foliate pattern and raised dot embellishments, while the base features concentric bands of circular and pointed motifs, adding ornamental depth and framing the floral composition. The underside of the pitcher is marked: "R.W. Martin Bros. London Southall 31.5. & 1.6.82," indicating it was crafted by Robert Wallace Martin and his brothers at their Southall workshop in London during late May and early June of 1882.
