Martin Brothers Salt Glazed Stoneware Bird Pitcher
Tall tapering cylindrical stoneware pitcher crafted by the Martin Brothers pottery, dated 1888. The exterior is decorated with incised and hand-colored slip decoration featuring birds in flight and perched among naturalistic reeds, thistles, and grasses. The detailed illustration continues around the vessel in a continuous frieze-like composition. Executed in a warm buff glaze with rich brown and ochre tones that highlight the textured relief, the piece exhibits the distinctive aesthetic associated with the Martin Brothers' work during the late 19th century. The handle, curved and integrated into the form, rises to meet the flared rim which includes a shallow spout. The base is incised with: R.W. Martin Bros. London & Southall 7-1888.
