Stoneware chess piece modeled as a bust of Samuel Pickwick, the fictional protagonist from Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers (1836-37). The piece is incised on the front Samuel Pickwick G.C.M.P.C. and on the reverse R.W. Martin Sc. with R.W. Martin & Bros. London & Southall 6 1906 inscribed on the base. Designed by Robert Wallace Martin, this work reflects the distinctive craftsmanship of the Martin Brothers, known for their detailed figural ceramics and expressive stoneware character studies.
