Martially-inspected early Colt First Model Dragoon percussion pistol, .44 cal., 7-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, wood grips, #2180. This gun is in overall good + to very good condition showing a dark patina on the barrel assembly, cylinder and frame with scattered areas of erosion and pin prick pitting, the brass straps are of the very early wide variation with a mellow patina and the serial numbers are small and all matching on the frame, barrel assembly, cylinder, arbor, trigger guard and back strap; the wedge is un-numbered. The cylinder scene is approx. 30% visible as is a portion of the pressure ridge; there are faint traces of case color on the frame and the markings, including a number of inspector stamps are visible with the “Colt’s Patent U.S.” on the left side of the frame being very clear. The loading lever shows scattered light pitting with a functioning latch; the action is crisp, the bore overall good with some scattered points of erosion; the grips are overall good with wear and several marks and scratches from carry and storage; both cartouches are visible. An opportunity to obtain an early desirable First Model Dragoon in surprisingly good condition as the majority of these early pieces were “ridden hard and put up wet” and this one has several of the highly sought after early features. Est.: $15,000-$30,000.
