Martha Washington’s Dress Swatch and Portrait Display
Martha Washington Dress Swatch, together with her Engraved Portrait, Framed to Display Size of 11.25” x 16.25”, Very Fine.
Original decorative and colorful Cloth Dress Swatch, measuring about 3” x 2.5” believed to be from Martha Washington’s ownership, framed together with a small Engraved Portrait of Martha Washington with her signature in facsimile below, in a framed display to a fully measuring 11.25” x 16.25”. An old sticker on the back with number “21” and another with the name “Knickerbocker” on its frame edge indicates this item was likely a display from the Knickerbocker Hotel built by John Jacob Astor IV in Manhattan, which opened in 1906. This original decorative frame has pronounced chipping and should likely be discarded. The Etching is by George W.P. Custis, the Grandson of Martha Washington, and who was also the father-in-law of Robert E. Lee. An additional label on the back of the frame, located below the paper cover, appears to show this Decorative Cloth Swatch is originally from the Custis estate, and had belonged to Martha Washington, though this direct provenance is unconfirmed. The Cloth Swatch appears in very fine condition with just some light fade and discoloration likely from its underlying mat board, while the engraving shows light foxing.
