French marshal (1727–1801) and minister of the navy who devised strategy which made possible the naval victories during the American Revolution. His brother-in-law was related to famed explorer Jean-Francois Galaup, Count de La Perouse. LS in French, signed “le Mal. De Castries,” one page, 8 x 12.5, September 7, 1785. Letter to Guillaume de Bellecombe, French Colonial governor. In part (translated): “I have received, Sir, the letter you did me the honor of writing on behalf of the Chevalier de Galaup, asking for anticipated payment of the second half of his salary…This request is absolutely contrary to the established Rules…I beg you to be persuaded of how much I regret not being able to make an exception in the case of your brother-in-law. Such an exception would have consequences.” Central horizontal fold, a mild overall shade of toning, a couple of small spots of soiling and foxing, and a few creases, otherwise fine condition.
