French governor of the Bastille (1740–1789) and commander of its garrison when it was stormed on July 14, 1789. ALS in French, signed “De launay,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, August 12, 1778. Short untranslated letter about setting free a prisoner under the order of a high ranking personality. Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered light toning and wrinkling, and a repaired top left corner, otherwise fine condition.
