Revolutionary War–dated ALS in English, signed “Lafayette,” one page, 6.75 x 8.5, May 10, 1782. Letter referencing Captain Louis-Rene Levassor de Latouche Treville and his frigate Aigle, in part: "I have been Honoured with your letter of the 7th…and am much obliged to you for the Goodness you had to advance the money I took the liberty to draw upon you. Agreeable to your request I hasten to inform you of what I know respecting Cte. de la Touche's departure—He commands the Eagle, a frigate of a new construction…and of course a good match even to a fifty gun ship. We are said to sail at the end of the Month, but I believe our departure will not take place before the first days of June." In very good to fine condition, with overall creasing, and paper loss to the upper left corner. Captain Latouche assumed command of the Aigle in early 1782, and in September was captured by the British when it ran aground. The Aigle remained in the service of the British Royal Navy until being wrecked in 1798.
