Marquis de Lafayette: Rare Large Creamware Bowl
Marquis de Lafayette: A Rare Large Creamware Bowl.

Lafayette was the last surviving major Revolutionary War hero. He made a visit to America in 1824, which occasioned the manufacture of numerous souvenir items, many of them ceramic. His death in 1834 inspired another outpouring of items celebrating his memory. This unusual bowl might date from either occasion. As is often the case with this Liverpool pottery, transfers were often used in a variety of combinations and forms. This bowl carries four transfers around the outside, two picturing Lafayette and two depicting the surrender of Cornwallis. These two transfers are familiar to collectors, as they appear on the copper luster pictures that, in their many sizes and shapes, are the most frequently seen Lafayette items. This impressive large bowl, in a tapered, footed form, is highly unusual. Overall condition is excellent, with one small area of restoration and several utterly trivial shallow flakes on the rim. Diameter: 9", height 5".

Shipping: Holloware/Pottery (view shipping information)
