<B><I>The Marquis de Lafayette<BR></B></I></B></I><BR>Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, French (1834-1904)<BR>Bronze with reddish brown patination<BR>Foundry mark for F. Barbidienna and A. Collas Reduction Mechanique stamp <BR>27.5 inches high<BR><BR> Depicting the famous French nobleman in military dress standing on the prow of a boat. In 1777, at the age of nineteen, Marquis de Lafayette, an extremely wealthy Frenchman and aristocrat, joined the ranks of the fledgling United States Army as a Major General in the American Revolutionary War. Lafayette (1757-1834) permanently renounced the title "Marquis" before the French National Assembly in June, 1790, after which he referred to himself as "General Lafayette." He was twice granted Honorary Citizenship of the United States, first in 1824 and again, posthumously in 2002, one of only six specific persons so honored.
