Marquis De Lafayette ALS "Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier" is pretty impressive for a name, but a little unwieldy. We all know him as "Marquis de Lafayette". Within his life (1757-1834), Lafayette amassed an impressive resume. Inherited a fortune at age 13...Captain in the French cavalry at 16...he became fascinated with the American Revolution. In 1777, using his own funds, he purchased fighting ship and sailed off to American to volunteer his aid to General Washington. He soon became a valued member of Washington's staff and, 1779, returned to France where he persuaded the government to step up assistance to the burgeoning democracy. Some years later, as the French Revolution burst forth, he was deemed a traitor and exiled in 1792. When the Revolution had calmed down somewhat, and he was again recognized as a caring patriot, he returned to France in 1800...only to find that his fortune had been confiscated. Late in life, he was caught up again in politics, helping to lead an overthrow of the Bourbon kings. From this historic figure comes a two page handwritten letter which has not been translated (a potential opportunity for the multilingual collector). It is in overall Very Good condition, with a modest tear appearing only on the address sheet and not affecting any of the content. Signed simply "Lafayette" this is a worthy addition to any collection of historic autographs.

Important not
