Marquis Cornwallis Letter Signed
Marquis Cornwallis Letter Signed, "Cornwallis", two pages, 8" x 12.5", London, February 9, 1794, to Henry Addington, Speaker of the House of Commons. The letter reads in part, "I had the honor to receive your letter dated the 9th of January, 1793, a few days before I embarked for Europe and I lost no time publishing to the whole Army at the three Presidencies the testimony of high approbation which the House of Commons have expressed in the Resolutions that you included to me, of the conduct and exertions of the European and native officers, non commissioned officers, and soldiers who served under my command in the field during the late war in India. Being sensible that the favorable opinion of the Representative of the Commons of Great Britain reflects the most distinguished honor upon any British subject, I request that you will assure the House that the flattering manner in which they have been pleased to declare their approbation of my conduct during that war, has impressed me with the strongest sensations of satisfaction and gratitude...". Expected light aging, else very good condition. Included is an 18th century newspaper clipping regarding Cornwallis at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina.

For most Americans the story of Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805) begins and ends with his surrender to Washington at Yorktown. He is smugly dismissed on this side of the Atlantic as somewhat of a bumbler. Cornwallis, however, played a vital role in bringing India into the British Empire after the American Revolution. His great successes in later life earned the general a title as well as overall redemption for his 1781 mishap in Virginia, which wouldn't have occurred anyway if not for the bloody French.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
