Marlon Brando Personal Hand Written Thank You Note
Marlon Brando Personal Hand Written Thank You Note - In a world where everything is digitalized with e-mail, text and Twitter, handwritten notes have become virtually extinct. These valuable pieces of Hollywood history are especially coveted when the participant is especially known for their ultra privacy and virtual total avoidance for autographs or correspondence. Perhaps one of the most recluse of these icons was Marlon Brando. In the early 1990's Hollywood was rushing to take advantage of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage to America. Several big budget movies were announced and were racing to go into production. The "winner" was “Christopher Columbus: The Discovery” (1992). It had a massive budget and an all star cast, including Marlon Brando, who was paid the largest share of the production budget for his small role of Tomás de Torquemada, the powerful Spanish Dominican friar who was the first person Columbus had to impress before getting the blessing of Queen Isabella to finance his voyage. They were able to get Brando‘s services because of his relationship with producer Ilya Salkind who made “Superman” of which Brando had an important part. The film was also written by the “Godfather’s” Mario Puzo, whom Brando respected. His scenes were shot in Spain where Brando stayed at the famous Palace Hotel in Madrid, considered then and now one of the top ten hotels in the world. The production became more famous however for Brando's outbursts, and curmudgeon nature at the Hotel and during production. This was especially troublesome to Brando being that the International Press and Paparazzi were aggressively pursuing him 24/7 in search of information, interviews or photos of him due to his son's personal matters at the time, as well as Brando's own tumultuous blowups during production. Because of this, the Hotel assigned their top personal VIP hotel representative, to personally take care of Brando's every need and to keep him away from the press and fans. Her name was Reyes Gaytán. At the end of production after Brando had left, she was surprised to receive a special gift from Brando, along with a handwritten note on his personal stationary. He wrote: "Dear Senorita Reyes - We are all in your debt for helping to make our hectic stay here smooth and pleasant. Thank you for your kindness - Marlon Brando". The letter has his engraved "MARLON BRANDO" name, and the matching envelope has his embossed home address in Beverly Hills along with Reyes Gaytán's name handwritten by Brando himself on the front. This letter also was unique because it, and the gift, were the only piece of gratitude from Marlon Brando to anyone at the hotel or in Madrid during his stay. This is that very cherished thank you note and envelope. It also includes Reyes Gaytán's personal official private Palace Hotel contact card, along with the original Palace Hotel stationary. Also included is an original Madrid newspaper with a lead article commemorating the Palace Hotel's 100th Anniversary as well as the 20th Anniversary of Brando's infamous celebrated stay, as well as his rare gift and note to Reyes Gaytán. The incredible collection also includes a Letter of Provenience from Reyes Gaytán.
