Marlin model 1881 lever action rifle, .40/60 caliber, 28” full octagon barrel, full magazine, shotgun butt with steel buttplate, blue and case hardened finish, factory engraved and inscribed “Clinton White” on left side of receiver, select checkered wood stocks, factory double triggers, period full length Slotterbeck-type scope mounted on left side with buck horn rear sight and blade front sight, serial number “7043”. The rifle remains in fine original condition, approx. 85-95% original blue on barrel and magazine tube, evenly thinning and toning, with some just starting normal age, a few marks and scratches on the edges, but generally sharp overall with crisp barrel address. The frame shows 75-85% case hardening, drifting to silvery grey with still visible rainbow colors covering the entire frame. The hammer and lever show 50-70% case hardening naturally toning. The checkered stocks show a light color and show good burl wood grain with sharp checkering and are very good plus overall with a few minor bumps, mars, slight scratches and normal aging. The full length tube scope is of a Slotterbeck-type and is still serviceable and clear, and shows most of its original finish drifting to brown. The rear sight is a high rocky mountain type buckhorn in the original dovetail and the front sight is a silver plated deluxe blade, well matched to the rear buckhorn. The action is tight, the interior near excellent. The engraving is absolutely factory and well accomplished with scrolls and banner on left and inscribed with the name “Clinton White”. On the right side the Marlin shows a leaping stag on and on the bolt shows a small vignette of stag head. The tang is mounted with a Lyman type tang sight. Clinton L. White was one of the most distinguished members of the California BAR from Sacramento County. in 1879 he prepared a manuscript for a book on criminal law. In 1880 and again in 1881 he was secretary of the judiciary committee for the California State Senate. For nearly two years between 1881 and 1882, he filled the office of Deputy Attorney General for the State of California. He argued many criminal cases for the State of California in the appeals court. He served 10 years in the California National Guard and rose to the rank of Lieutenant and Major of the Judge Advocates Office. In 1892 he aided in writing the charter for the city of Sacramento. He served as Mayor for the city of Sacramento between 1908 and 1910 and had a series of legal accomplishments and political offices throughout his life.
