Marlin Model 1889 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter
This is a very fine example of a Marlin Model 1889 Lever Action Rifle with factory letter. The factory letter states that this rifle was shipped from the factory on November 8, 1893 and that it was chambered in "38 caliber" and had a 24-inch octagon barrel. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver with casehardened hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are varnished walnut. The barrel is fitted with a dove-tail "Rocky Mountain" front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN CT. U.S.A./PATENTED OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber ".38 - W." is stamped on the top of the barrel in front of the receiver. "-MARLIN SAFETY-" is roll-stamped on the top of the receiver. The serial number, "84116" is stamped on the front edge of the receiver bottom.
BBL: 24 inch octagonal
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 38-40 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 84116

Very fine. The rifle retains approximately 80% of the original blue. Nearly all of the blue is present on the barrel and magazine. The finish on the sides of the receiver is thin with some scattered scratches and flaking and some light edge wear. The hammer and loading lever retain nearly 40% of the casehardened finish. The case colors on the butt plate have a silver patina. The stock and forearm have most of the original varnish finish and have scattered, minor, handling marks. The markings on the barrel and receiver are sharp. This is a very fine, original, example of a Marlin Model 1889 Rifle
