Marlin Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle
Manufactured circa 1882. Rocky Mountain silver blade front sight, semi-buckhorn elevator rear sight. The tang has been drilled and tapped. The top barrel flat is marked, "MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW - HAVEN, CT U.S.A." address over the patent and reissue dates, with arrows pointing inward flanking the top line. The top flat at the breech is marked "40 CAL". The loading gate has a sliding cover. Mounted with a smooth forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
BBL: 28 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 40-60 Marlin
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 3296
Condition: Very good. All metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown patina. The wood has been sanded and stripped with none of the finish remaining (a majority is crazing). The stock is ill-fitting at the wrist and there is a hairline crack and a few minor dents on the forearm. The second line of the barrel marking is fading, otherwise the markings are readable. The action functions fine despite the lever being a bit loose.
