Antique Marlin-Ballard No. 9 ''Union Hill'' Cartridge Rifle, #27158, .38-55 CF cal., 30'' round-to-octagonal blued barrel marked only ''38-55'' on top flat, windgauge front sight and mid-range Vernier adjustable peep tang sight; case hardened receiver marked ''Marlin Fire Arms Co., New Haven, CT. U.S.A./Ballard's Patent Nov. 5, 1861'' on left side; nickel-plated loop cocking lever and short prong offhand type buttplate. Nicely grained walnut stocks; pistol-grip buttstock with fleur-de-lis shaped checkered panel at right wrist, checkering at left wrist ahead of carved cheekpiece and oval horn buttcap with silver plate having the initials ''W.E.B.'' engraved within fancy border; forestock with long checkered panel and horn forend tip. Condition is excellent retaining 98% original barrel blue, just slightly subdued mottled color case hardening, and all original nickel to operating lever and buttplate. Stocks show lovely grain and color, are excellent with sharp checkering, only very minor handling marks and retain all their original varnish finish; right side of forestock at juncture with receiver has a 1.5'' crack (easily repaired). Action is smooth and tight; bore is shiny with sharp rifling; screw head slots are unmarred. A prize in single shot rifles. Est.: $3,000-$4,000. (Antique)
