Marlin-Ballard Heavy Barrel Lever Action No. 5 Pacific Sporting Rifle, #6459, .40 CF cal., 30'' heavyweight octagonal barrel with dovetailed long blade front and Rocky Mountain type open rear sights; steel ramrod beneath barrel retained by two dovetailed ferrules; steel receiver with dropping-block action is marked on left side, ''J.M. Marlin New Haven Conn. U.S.A./Ballard's Patent Nov. 5, 1861''; finger-loop operating lever, double set triggers, steel crescent buttplate; oil-finished forend (with ebony insert at ramrod channel) and buttstock. Mfg'd 1876-91. Condition is about good, the metal parts being a gunmetal gray color over cleaned pitting, the markings faint or obscured. Stocks show overall wear and knackering and a nail repair or fastening at underside of wrist. Ramrod is likely a period replacement, as it is too long. Action functions correctly; bore is clean with distinct rifling. Est.: $800-$1,500. (Antique)
