Marlin-Ballard Model 4 ½ A-1 mid-range target rifle in .38-50 caliber showing 30” half round half octagon barrel, serial number 2910. The frame is lightly engraved with Ballard A-1 in large letters at center left side of frame and mid-range on right side of frame. The rifle is stocked in select grade figured Walnut showing typical checkering pattern with pistol grip, raised cheek piece and Swiss style butt plate. The barrel is mounted with a Winchester type folding rear sight which is in the correct dovetail and is marked differently than Winchester but is very similar to model 1876 sight. The blue appears to match the barrel and this may be a unique sight to this Ballard made on special order. The front sight is missing from the dovetail and there is no tang sight (no evidence of ever having one). The barrel retains 90% to 95% bright original blue with just some minor aging and slight losses at the edges with a few areas of minor beginning erosion near the muzzle. The frame shows 30% to 50% case hardening drifting to a silver grey with some faint colors showing. The stocks are very good plus to near fine with some scratches in the varnish. The checkering is sharp and wood shows a nice burled wood grain. A ½” crack which is minor shows at the top of the wrist at the frame on the left side of the action. The bore is near excellent and still very bright. A-1 collectors quality Ballard in the desirable mid-range caliber. Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
