Marlin Ballard #44 sporting rifle by Merrimack Arms, .44 duel ignition, slightly heavy octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, standard varnish wood stocks. Serial #18331. The barrel measures 7/8” across the flats. The barrel shows 75-85% original toning blue finish, the action shows 40-60% case hardening drifting to silvery grey with some rainbow colors still showing lightly. The upper part of the frame shows some scratching about the size of a thumb print where there may have been a sight soldered on and removed. The forend shows a couple small losses at the edges, some dings and mars, the buttstock shows a few dents, dings and mars also. The buttplate shows traces of case hardening going to patina. The original rear and front sight are retained. The hammer shows patent dates. The action is good, the bore near excellent. This ingenious Ballard spanned the gap between percussion and cartridge arms by utilizing either a cap or cartridge. Est: $1,750 - $2,500
