Literature:Stairs, Susan, Markey Robinson - A Life in Retrospective, Shorthall-Stairs Publications Dublin, 1998, p.45, catalogue no. 59 (listed and illustrated).
Stairs q.v., writes: "Compositionally, this is similar to Gauguin's Ta Matete 1892, but, in Five Women, Markey has said - "they're in different positions". Gauguin's painting features five women seated on a bench (also one standing). In fact, the only figure whose head is turned in a different direction is the second figure from the right who faces to the right in Ta Matete and straight on in Five Women. Markey's piece is tighter, more compact, with a spartan background of muted grey. Each figure is composed of a few simple shapes of pure colour - the whole structure consists of solid areas of form linked together in the manner of a jigsaw."
