''Eve's Diary'' by Mark Twain, published by Harper and Brothers: London and New York: 1906. Signed boldly on the pastedown with typical wit by the legendary American author: ''To Miss Anne Fields -- with the affectionate regards of The Author. / Bermuda, Feb. 29, 1908. / We ought never to do wrong when people are looking. Truly yours, Mark Twain''. Originally published in ''Harper's Bazaar,'' the book purports to be Eve's first person account of her experience in the newly-created Garden of Eden ''translated from the original ms.'' It was written shortly after the death of Twain's wife of 34 years and ends poignantly at Eve's grave with Adam's statement: ''Wheresoever she was, there was Eden.'' The book's black and white woodcut illustrations by Lester Ralph caused a controversy at the time of publication because the first couple was shown without clothing. All of Ralph's fifty-five illustrations are present as are first printing points, ''Published June, 1906'' on copyright page and ''London and New York'' on title page. The book, measuring 5.25'' x 8'', in original red-cloth boards, without dustjacket, shows minor foxing and toning throughout. Minor soiling to boards and fading to backstrip; overall in very good condition.
