Mark Twain signed first edition of ''The Complete Works of Mark Twain / Definitive Edition.'' Gabriel Wells: New York: 1922, 1925. This complete set contains 37 volumes, 1 through 35 issued in 1922, plus a two-volume autobiography issued in 1925. This volume is 122 of 1,024 sets, with the fly-leaf bearing the ''S.L. Clemens / Mark Twain'' signature in Volume 1. On the front free endpaper, opposing the signed fly-leaf, is a signature by editor Albert Bigelow Paine with the statement, ''This fly-leaf was signed by Mark Twain in 1906 in anticipation of the present definitive edition of his works.'' Twain's autobiography was dictated largely in the last few years of his life before his death in 1910. Several versions were produced by various editors; this edition presented the material in the order Twain intended. Set includes bibliography and indexes and is illustrated with photogravure frontispieces and plates by Matthew Brady, E.W. Kemble, Howard Pyle, Dan Beard, Peter Newell, A.B. Frost, among others. With each of Twain's masterpieces printed, including: ''The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,'' ''Life on the Mississippi,'' ''The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,'' ''The Innocents Abroad,'' ''The New Pilgrim's Progress,'' as well as ''Mark Twain's Speeches,'' and ''Mark Twain's Letters…'' Volumes, measuring 6'' x 9'', are bound in blue cloth with printed paper labels pasted on the spines, imprinted with title, author and volume number. Minor shelf wear, particularly to edges, and some soiling to paper labels. Front hinge to volume 1 cracked, and a closed tear to the backstrip of volume 29, else very good condition with clean pages and pristine signatures.
