MacKay. 7) Bank Of Calif., July, 1874,RN-D1, signed by James Fair... History "Mariposa Mill" Company- Located at the head of Seven Mile Canyon, South of the Sierra Nev. mine. It cost $20,000.00 to build, used 12 stamps, and could crush 15 tons of ore per day. The mill was owned by the Bank Of California, and crushed ore from the Hale & Norcross Mine. -- Notes on "James G. Fair", credited with the discovery of the "Big Bonanza". He was in the 1849 Gold Rush. In 1869 he was made the Super. of the Ophir Mine. 1867 he found himself Assistant Super. of the Hale & Norcross Mine, while there he met John MacKay, and together they formed an alliance. Fair began to work Quietly with MacKay, James Flood, and William S. O'Brien to obtain control of this mine as well as many other mines of the Comstock. "Slippery Jim Fair" as he was to be called, served in the U.S. senate from 1881-1887. Fair died in S.F. in 1891. -- Notes on "J.W. MacKay", Born- Dublin Ireland in 1831, died 20,1902. In 1851 he went to Calif. and placer mined in Sierra Co., in 1859, he went to V.C., Nev., and there after loosing all he made in Calif. formed a business partnership with J. Fair, the pair along with Flood, and O'Brien, began dealing in mining stocks and operated mines on the Comstock, in 1873, they found the "Big Bonanza" in the Consolidated Virginia & California Mine. Together the four businessmen established the Bank of Nevada. MacKay's net worth at his death in 1902 was 30 Million.City: Virginia CityCounty: State: NV
