MARION ROSS
Perhaps the most well known matriarch on television, beloved actress Marion Ross has added another head of the family to her stockpile. Looking for a new twist in the continuing saga of the hit series, “Brothers and Sisters,” Marion was brought in to create the role of the meddlesome mother of regulars Sally Field and Ron Rivkin and grandmother of Calista Flockhart. The show follows her recurring role as the mother of Drew Carey on his ABC prime time show and as the matriarch on “Gilmore Girls.”
It’s the latest television link in a motherly chain that winds back to her 11-year portrayal of Mrs. Cunningham on the now-classic “Happy Days” and as the head of a Jewish immigrant family from Poland on the critically-acclaimed series “Brooklyn Bridge.”
When “TV Guide” published a list of the l00 top television episodes of all time, compiled by the magazine’s staff, Marion starred in three of them: Mrs. C from “Happy Days,” the family matriarch in “Brooklyn Bridge” and the Captain’s love interest in the popular “Love Boat” series.
While Marion is greeted by fans worldwide, who say they grew up with Mrs. C. as virtually a second mother figure, she went on to attract the affection of a new group of children who now squeal with delight as they discover she is the grandmother of Sponge Bob Squarepants.
When Marion was barely a teenager, avidly determined even then on an acting career, her understanding mother allowed her to move to Minneapolis by herself and study there with a drama coach. Soon she began her theatrical career working as a stagehand for drama students at the University of Minnesota, where she was not enrolled. Later, after her family settled in San Diego, Marion became a drama major herself at San Diego State, where, during her freshman year, she was voted the school’s Most Outstanding Actress.
While acting at the La Jolla Playhouse director Mel Ferrer steered her toward Hollywood and a Paramount Pictures contract. Launching her film career with a role in “Forever Female,” Marion soon followed with “Teacher’s Pet,” “Legend of the Incas,” “Sabrina” and “The Proud and the Profane.” Later, she played in “The Glenn Miller Story” for Universal, as well as “Operation Petticoat,” again with Gavin MacLeod, with whom she had previously appeared in a romantic teaming for “The Walter Winchell Film.”
Another major break came when she won a co-starring role as the Irish maid in CBS’ “Life With Father,” which had the additional distinction of being the first live series to be aired in color and ran for three years. Again, she portrayed an Irish maid in CBS’ “Blithe Spirit,” a dramatic special in which she appeared with Noel Coward, Claudette Colbert and Lauren Bacall.
While she earned millions of fans worldwide and is recognized from Europe to the Far East and Australia as the zany but steadfast Milwaukee housewife, Mrs. C. on “Happy Days,” she went from that popular series to playing Gavin MacLeod’s love interest in “Love Boat,” and then left television to star on Broadway and the national tour with Jean Stapleton in “Arsenic and Old Lace.” She later found time to guest with old pal Henry Winkler on “McGyver,” on which he was the executive producer.
Marion lives in a charmingly-decorated, spacious country-style home in the San Fernando Valley. She has nick-named her estate “Happy Days Farm,” “…because the series helped pay for it.”
