Mario Mazzella (1923-2008), ‘Smoking Fisherman with Pipe’, 1963
The Italian painter Mario Mazzella (1923-2008) created this expressive painting of a smoking fisherman from Ischia in 1963. A native of Ischia himself, Mazzella succeeded with this portrait in creating a striking character study of the islander. Mazzella has reduced the portrayal of the fisherman to the essential, so that the features of the old man – his humanity – come to its full advantage. The greenish, abstract background shows a draped fishing net – a fisherman’s attribute par excellence.

Mazzella’s paintings show influences of the great artists of his time, such as Van Gogh, De Chirico or Gauguin. However, he has found his own artistic language, characterized by his typical colouring, contours, planar and partly scratched paint application.

The painting is signed, inscribed and dated upper right ‘M. Mazzella / Ischia 1963’. The condition is very good, showing only minimal signs of age. The partly gold-coloured wood frame is in good condition, featuring only slight signs of wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 122 x 93 cm. The stretcher measures 109 x 80 cm.
