Gary was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He began painting and drawing as a child. He developed a love for the outdoors and old west while spending summers on the ranches of relatives in western South Dakota. In High School he was an active member of the Dakota Artists Guild and the Black Hills Art Association. He majored in Fine Arts at the University of North Dakota. One of his instructors was the noted contemporary artist, Brian Paulsen. His art career was put on hold when he was accepted to Medical School at the University of South Dakota. As a full time physician he only painted a limited amount during the next 30 years. He never exhibited his work during this time. He did execute some commissions during this period, including illustration for medical schools and portraiture for the Veterans Administration. In 2003, he was able to limit his busy medical practice enough to resume drawing and oil painting in earnest. He attended painting workshops in Laguna Beach and Scottsdale and trained extensively with the renowned English painter, Paul Abbott. Paul Abbott apprenticed with the noted English painter Robert Lenkiewicz. Gary was influenced heavily by both of these artists' representational styles. His first public exhibition since childhood was in 2005 in Prescott, Arizona, where he now resides. Gary won First Place, 2-D, for his oil painting in the 2006 Arizona Visions Art Competition. His studio was selected to participate in the 2006 Smithsonian CultureFest in Prescott, Arizona. Gary is now retired from the medical profession and paints full time in his studio in Prescott, Arizona. Gary is the drawing instructor at Ecosa Institute, also in Prescott. He illustrates for the periodical, "Territorial Times". The artist works almost exclusively in oils, pencil and conte. He uses a representational style to create portraiture, landscape, seascape, western and plein air works of art. He has evolved his style into the production of abstract works in oil as well.
