Vintage oversized matte-finish 10.5 x 13.5 crystal-clear head-and-shoulders smiling portrait of the recumbent Marilyn lying on a cushion, adorned in diamonds with her hair and make-up looking perfect and precise, signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint, “To Sammy. It’s a pleasure to work with you. Warmest regards, Marilyn Monroe.” Larger format photos such as this were generally only given to very close friends or other personal acquaintances, and are very seldom offered for sale; in this case, the ‘Sammy’ Marilyn refers to is Sam Benson from the Wardrobe Department who worked on numerous Monroe films including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How To Marry A Millionaire. In very good to fine condition, with lightly trimmed edges, some scattered light surface loss to edges, a diagonal crease to lower right corner, remarkably unobtrusive professionally repaired creases to her forehead area and to an area of the cushion background, and a few light spots to lower portion of image, none of which affects her florid handwriting or strikingly large signature. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from James Spence. A rare and exquisite portrait, exceedingly uncommon in this oversized and highly displayable format.
