The year of 1961 proved to be a difficult year for Marilyn. Her divorce from Arthur Miller was finalized in January, and the month’s following her dependence on alcohol and prescription medications began to take a toll on her health. A month after writing this check, Joe DiMaggio asked Marilyn to remarry him in an attempt to save her.
