Marilyn Monroe Signed Check dated July 24, 1961, drawn on the Bankers Trust Company, and payable to New York State Unemployment Insurance Fund for $86.85, 8.25" x 3". Monroe was a movie star and sex symbol, but has reached a pop icon status that few will ever equal. Baptized Norma Jean Baker, she was discovered during World War II working in an airplane parts factory; her photogenic face (& etc.) graced scores of magazine covers through the 1940s. In 1946 she signed a short-term contract with Twentieth Century Fox, taking the screen name of Marilyn Monroe. The early 1950s found her in ever-larger film roles until she reached star status with performances in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, and There's No Business Like Show Business. In 1954 she married baseball superstar Joe DiMaggio, an event that made front-page news. Her career was cut short in 1962 when she was found dead in the bedroom of her Brentwood, California home on August 5th, ostensibly a suicide by an overdose of sleeping pills. (Insert your own conspiracy theory here.) This particular Marilyn Monroe check is one of the few we've seen where none of the bank stamps or cancellations affect her signature. The check is matted with blue silk and fillets with the famous "white dress" up skirt photo from Seven Year Itch and framed to an overall size of 18.75" x 29". A fabulous display.
