Marilyn Monroe Playboy First Issue
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Rare first issue of ''Playboy'' magazine, December 1953, Volume I. Landmark issue of Hugh Hefner's pioneering and controversial men's magazine, featuring the famous color centerfold of Playboy's very first ''Sweetheart of the Month,'' Marilyn Monroe, with ''First Time in any magazine / Full Color / the famous Marilyn Monroe Nude'' printed on the cover. Issue includes a parlor strip game pictorial entitled ''Playboy Party Jokes,'' Virgil Partch cartoons mocking the Kinsey Report, and the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle excerpt ''Introducing Sherlock Holmes.'' An article on the incomparable Marilyn Monroe calls her, ''…the juiciest morsel to come out of the California Hills since the discovery of the navel orange.'' The famous ''Red Velvet'' centerfold photo was taken by photographer Tom Kelley and is described by the magazine as such: ''We'll be running a beautiful, full color unpinned pin-up in each new issue of Playboy, but we're mighty pleased to have the famous nude Marilyn Monroe as a starter…There were actually two poses shot au naturel back in '49, just before the gorgeous blonde got her first movie break. When they appeared as calendar art, they helped catapult her to stardom. We've selected the better of the two as our first Playboy Sweetheart.'' Magazine, measuring 8.5'' x 11'', has some minor creasing on front cover and one almost unnoticeable red ink mark on centerfold. All first issue indicators are present, including two staples at binding and a square block at upper right. Overall in very good plus condition with no significant flaws whatsoever. Covers still glossy, binding secure with no rust present on staples, and interior pages near fine.
