ALS in French, signed “M. Curie,” one page, 5.25 x 8.5, April 6, 1934. Letter to physicist Jean Surugue. In part (translated): "Returning from a trip I thought I might see you here and eventually see the apparatus. Unfortunately I had a fever yesterday and must return right away. The news that you gave me about the magnet seems quite good to me, although the results are a little less than expected.” In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds and scattered creases.

Marie Curie first met her husband Pierre through her research in magnetism, after having been commissioned for a study of the magnetic properties of steel in 1894. They got married the next year, and eight years later were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their breakthroughs in radiation. Although this remains their primary scientific legacy, Pierre Curie’s research in magnets remains relevant today and several magnetic properties and theorems are named after him.
