A VERY RARE PORCELAIN DISH - FACTORY OF ANDRE-MARIE LEBOEUF, RUE THIROUX, PARIS c. 1780

9 1/2 " (24 cms) diam.

This is a porcelain dish made at the Rue Thiroux factory of Andre-Marie Leboeuf in approx. 1780.

The factory was at the time under the patronage of Queen Marie Antoinette following an altercation between Leboeuf and the celebrated Sevres factory who resented the production of this exquisite porcelain which rivaled their own.



Please look at Regine de Plinval de Guillebon's 1972 book Porcelains of Paris page 92. There is a round scalloped ribbed bowl dish very close to this one but not as finely painted as this bowl. Also see The French interior in the eighteenth century by John Whitehead 1992. page 183 there is a dinner service with cornflower trails and monograms from the manufacture de la Reine, Rue Thiroux factory in Paris with dishes in the shape of this one but still not as fine as this one.

The Queen encouraged Leboeuf in the production of fine porcelain by ordering china for her dairy at Versailles and as presents for favored friends. Subsequently, Leboeuf's china became known as "Porcelaine de la Reine".

The Queen favored the "Cornflower" or "Chantilly Sprig" designs, of which this dish is a fine example and which bears the mark granted to the factory being a capital "A" beneath the Queen's crown in red.

The dish is of fluted lobed form decorated with intertwined garlands of cornflowers and gilt leaves within gilt borders. There is a central gilt rosette ...
