Maricopa Pueblo Indian Black on Red Pottery c 1920
Featured in this lot is this Maricopa Pueblo Indian, "Black on Red" pottery collection, circa 1920's. There are two pots in this collection. The pots show traditional decoration of black designs on the lip and to the outside of the pots and they are constructed from red clay. Pueblo pottery is made using a coiled technique that came into northern Arizona and New Mexico from the south about 1500 years ago. In the four-corners region of the US, nineteen pueblos and villages have historically produced pottery. Although each of these pueblos uses similar traditional methods of coiling, shaping, finishing and firing, the pottery from each is distinctive. The condition of these Pueblo pots is good for their age, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of these Pueblo pots are 3 1/2" x 5 1/4" x 5 1/4"and 3 1/2" x 4" x 4".
