Fantastic typed letter signed by Margaret Mitchell regarding sourcing her novel ''Gone With the Wind.'' Letter dated 26 September 1938 on Mitchell's personal stationery is written to an Elizabeth Bowlby, a woman working upon her Master's degree who apparently asked Mitchell for references in writing the novel. In part, ''…I thank you so much for the compliment you paid 'Gone With the Wind' when you wrote that it had been the 'direct cause' for your choice of subject for your Master's degree…A great deal of the source material that went into 'Gone With the Wind' came from eyewitness accounts. Now, most of the old people with whom I talked many years ago are dead. I wonder if you have tried military memoirs of the period and the reminiscences written by many ladies? [Mitchell then recommends several] I will suggest a few people who may be able to give you some information:…My father, Mr. Eugene Mitchell, can tell you where the various hospitals were located. My brother, Mr. Stephens Mitchell, may be able to give you his sources for his articles in the Bulletin of the Atlanta Historical Society…Miss Sarah Huff lived through the troublous days of the sixties and has written many articles about that period…'' Lengthy two page letter (on two sheets) is signed very boldly, ''Margaret Mitchell Marsh'' in black fountain pen. Pages measuring 7.25'' x 11'' are in near fine condition with some discreet pencil notations and mailing folds. Accompanied by original mailing envelope with Mitchell's printed Atlanta address. Also accompanied by two letters to Bowlby from the Atlanta Historical Society.
