Marcus Garvey typed letter signed as President and General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). On UNIA stationery and dated 21 September 1934, letter to William Sherrill in Detroit, Michigan reads in part, ''the Parent Body of the Universal Negro Improvement Association is now in great need of financial assistance to be able to liquidate its liabilities to carry out the new programme that has been decided on at Convention. During the last couple years the burden of carrying the Organization fell upon my shoulders financially, which left me in a dangerous financial plight...it has been decided to transfer the headquarters...[to]...London, England...I am writing to your Division to ask that you immediately raise money to the amount of $50.00 to forward to the Parent Body...[signed] Marcus Garvey''. Fragile single-page letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Toning, chipping to edges and a paperclip imprint to top edge. Very good condition.
