French painter (1887-1968) known for Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2. When this painting was exhibited at the Armory Show in New York City in 1913, it created an uproar and was the focal point for derogatory criticism of the show. ALS in French, one page both sides, 6 x 7.75, November 14, 1962. Letter to Marcel Marien, one of the most intriguing and elusive figures of the Surrealist movement. In part: “I saw Mr. Messer yesterday evening, he is expecting your letter and will probably ask you to go see him.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Duchamp’s hand. In fine condition.
