Russian-born artist (1887–1985) whose colorful, fanciful depictions of peasant life, Judaica, and other subjects earned him a place among the best-known visual artists of the 20th century. ALS in French, one page both sides, 4 x 5.5, April 8. Letter to writer Joe Bousquet, for whom Chagall painted some illustrations for his book. In part (loosely translated) “It has been a few days since I received your book…thank you. My wife is still sick, I do not have much time to write. I'm reading [through] your book, your heart-palpitating, subtle and generous, loving life…. I take great pleasure in reading it, to be closer to you….” In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning and soiling.
